Grammar Point #1 : Using the be-verb “です”
ですis a common verb in Japanese. It means the same thing as “is”,”am”, or “be” in English. The following charts models the use of ですin Japanese. “Is not” is represented by “では/じゃ ありません”。
Statement: これ は ビデオ です。
Question これ は かがみ です か？
Is this mirror?
Answer はい、かがみ です。
Yes, it’s a mirror.
はい、そう です。
Yes, that is correct.
いいえ、かがみ で は ありません。
No, its not a mirror.
いいえ、かがみ じゃ ありません。
